About 200 protesters in the US capital marked the 11th anniversary Friday of the arrival of inmates at the US-run detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, demanding its immediate closure. The demonstrators marched from the Supreme Court to Congress to the White House in Washington, chanting “Close Guantanamo now!” and “Guantanamo has to go!”

President Barack Obama vowed when he was first elected in 2008 that he would close the prison camp.

Emeryville, CA, Friday January 4:   At an AMC multiplex where Zero Dark Thirty opened in the Bay Area, World Can’t Wait and other activists (including Amnesty International and Code Pink) were there from the first showing into the evening, flyering and agitating around a statue-still man in Guantanamo jumpsuit, hood and chains. His signboard read: “Torture is ALWAYS illegal, immoral and unacceptable – Don’t Buy CIA Lies!”

These students were between 4 and 6 years old the day the U.S. attacked Afghanistan.  Now they see military recruiters prowling their campuses because the empire needs them to fight, kill, and die for it.

In San Francisco Thursday night, about 80 people met up tonight in the Mission District at a BART (subway) plaza, lofting colorful banners and signs.  We came from different movements – antiwar, Occupy, veterans – and people were feeling fierce.  A short rally brought up speakers from the Bradley Manning Support Network, Courage to Resist, Code Pink, World Can’t Wait, and Veterans for Peace.
