Red Cross: Civilian Toll Soars in Southern Afghanistan

A new report by the International Committee of the Red Cross warned today that civilian casualties are soaring in Southern Afghanistan, and that those directly wounded are a comparatively minor part of the problem.
 
“This is just the tip of the iceberg”, warned Reto Stocker, head of the ICRS’s Kabul delegation, “those who suffer other sorts of injuries or contract disease as an indirect result of the conflict far outnumber weapon-wounded patients”.

U.S. in Pakistan: First Kill, then ‘Apologize’

After six days of officially defending the attack against Pakistani soldiers in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas as “self defense,” the United States has made an enormous U-turn in official rhetoric, publicly apologizing today.
 
“We extend our deepest apology to Pakistan and the families of the Frontier Scouts who were killed and injured,” insisted US Ambassador to Pakistan Anne Patterson. “Pakistan’s brave security forces are our allies.”

Eight Germans Reported Killed in US Drone Strike

Eight German citizens were reported killed today in a US drone strike against the North Waziristan Agency, in an attack officials tried to link to a plot which led the US State Department yesterday to warn against travel to Europe.
 
The eight were killed when a US drone fired a pair of missiles against a mosque in the town of Mir Ali. Pakistani officials initially reported that some Pakistanis may have been killed in the attack as well, but this has yet to be confirmed.

US Drone Strikes Kill 15 in N. Waziristan

The Associated Press does an important story about an intensive drone strike campaign by the US military since September 2 in southern Afghanistan and in Pakistan’s North Waziristan that has left 60 persons dead, among them innocent civilians.
 
On Tuesday alone, US drone attacks targeted suspected militants killed some 15 persons in the village of Dargah Mandi village on the outskirts of Miranshah, N. Waziristan’s main city.

Children Among 24 Killed as US Drone Strikes Rock Pakistan

At least four children were killed today in addition to 20 other “suspected militants” in a series of four US drone strikes against sites tied to the Haqqani militant group in North Waziristan, part of Pakistan’s Federally Administered Tribal Areas.
 
The attacks destroyed three homes in North Waziristan as well as a car. The children were in a home near one of the targeted homes which was also damaged in the blast.

Wardak Province, Afghanistan: NATO Again Kills Civilians in Night Raid – 300 Civilians Block Roads

Angry villagers took to the streets of Wardak Province today and blocked one of the main thoroughfares in the wake of an overnight raid by NATO troops which killed three brothers in their home.
 
Locals say that the three brothers were civilians, and were killed in their sleep during the raid. Their father was also detained. NATO insists the father was a “known Taliban leader” and the three brothers were “suspected insurgents.”
